Would love that, but I doubt it'll ever happen. It doesn't fit in with current styles and attitudes. Anime seems to have got a lot more safe and far less experimental (pun not intended!) and ground-breaking over the past few years. More's the pity.
Similar to Serial Experiments Lain? Hmmm, it's a pretty unique series... Not sure if it's similar, per se, but you could try Satoshi Kon's films. Perfect Blue (film) is a good psychological thriller which is also very spare and atmospheric, Paranoia Agent (series) is supposed to be weird as - though it's still on my to watch list. Paprika is also pretty mental, though more in terms of its surreal dream sequences. Millennium Actress is one of my favourite films and really plays around with narrative structure and the nature of a story, and Tokyo Godfathers is heart-warming, but full of hidden messages if you're into that kind of thing.
I'm a big fan of Kon's, it's such a shame he died so young.
